An office variation is a change to the starting office, chosen at random and changed with every restart. There can only be one variation at a time, and usually endings with transition screens (e.g. Confusion Ending) or endings requiring going through a specific door (e.g. Escape Pod Ending), it lets the player go back to the office, clear any variations active and reset the office to its default state.
In the current version of the game all variations that do not simply alter the default office but change it completely trigger the Alternate Hallway glitch.
Layout variations[]
Below is a list of variations with structural changes to the office itself.
Blue Office[]
Affects all rooms leading up to the two doors, replacing them with a small, blue, L-shaped office. While it features the bucket, the balloons, if present beforehand, will be gone. Along with that, Blue Office like Short office will make it impossible to activate an Awaiting Input monitor.
This variation is the only way to access the Whiteboard Ending. Along with that, its form of the alternate hallway glitch is quite different from the short office variation - while in the former going through the door simply swaps the hallway for a default office until the player walks back into the starting room, if Blue Office is active, unless the player avoids the alternate hallway glitch, going through the door resets the workplace to its default state, leaving an empty void in place of the door to the starting office, and as such, walking back will make the player fall out of bounds.
It is also impossible to get the achivement "Knock on Door 430 5 Times" as this door does not exist in this variation.
Scattered papers[]
Affects accessible rooms leading up to the two doors room and the two doors room itself. The variation consists of the floor being covered in random paper notes and nothing else. The two doors room largely remains normal aside from a few paper near the entrance.
Short office[]
Changes the entire starting office to just a small hallway. It's quite dark and like the Blue Office does not keep the balloons.
Short Office happens to be the requirement/one of the ways of getting the Speedrun achievement. It is also notable for being the most obvious example of the Alternate Hallway Glitch.
Long office[]
Puts additional rooms between the two doors and the hallway leading up to it. Consists of a dim corridor with two turns and a long hallway in the style of the blue office. Features doors for employee rooms unseen anywhere else and papers on the floor usually only[citation needed] present in the room with the elevator opposite to the boss' office, but otherwise has no other notable features.
Left turn[]
Makes the first hallway from the starting rooms turn to the left instead of to the right. If you still have uncollected figleys this will make the Figurine Finders Committee meeting paper on the wall disappear. One of the doors will also automatically shut behind you which doesn't happen in the normal office layout.
Glitched monitors[]
Can be triggered only[citation needed] by resetting manually without locking into an ending. Replaces the monitor screens in the normally accessible rooms up until the two doors with a glitchy image repeating "The end is never" over and over. There are no other changes.
Other[]
Below are the office variations that do not directly alter the office layout.
Phone calls[]
Phone calls can be picked up from the phone on employee 434's desk and can output one of the three following conversations. They leave the door to Stanley's office open, which is necessary for Bucket Coward and Bucket Heaven, however may bug out if the player is locked into the escape pod ending by still triggering narration for the latter two, despite the fact that Narrator is supposed to be absent. All phone calls likely originate from the phone right behind employee 416's door as there are scripts lying for all of them. Additionally, all people calling seem to be the same person.
Future Happiness Foundation[]
The conversation consists of the caller on the behalf of Future Happiness Foundation asking to confirm an order of 1,327 cardboard boxes, which if confirmed, will fill up the entirety of the starting office on the next reset. However if the player doesn't interact with the phone, after 5 seconds the order would decline and nothing would change.
Stanley's wife[]
The call starts with Stanley's wife saying she's leaving a message to remind Stanley to get some groceries on the way home("milk", "cereal", "dish soap", "spaghetti", "a thing of sugar" and "coffee beans, which ever ones you like", to be exact), and adding she'll give him a call if there's anything she forgot, then hanging up.
If the player is holding a bucket at the time at the time of picking up the phone this call will be replaced by its bucket version. In it Stanley's wife calls to notify him of leaving his bucket at home and saying that she'll bring it to his workplace, before realizing that the bucket is not Stanley's nor does it seem to belong to anyone, so she decides to keep it.
Pre-recorded message[]
The caller will begin by informing the player that this is a pre-recorded message scheduled "either by you or someone in your place of work", intended to warn about the danger of pre-recorded messages. They'll begin by advising that the recipient that if at any point they are listening to a pre-recorded message they are to terminate it immediately before it "enters your perceptual sphere", afterwards the call ends.
Rain[]
There is a chance of rain sounds being heard when standing near a window. Interestingly enough if the player locks into the escape pod ending, the rain sounds will not be heard in the office or the boss' bathroom, but only in the staircase and the boss' office.
Soundtrack[]
Sometimes the "Exploring Stanley" track is replaced by "Anticipating Stanley" instead.
Other Stanley[]
From the window out of employee 425's office could be seen a person slowly walking across the corridor with the same model as Stanley himself. In Ultra Deluxe, Other Stanley walks from left to right, opposite to the player, while in HD Remix he walked from right to left instead.
Dialogue[]
Orders stopped[]
The variation consists of the starting dialogue being replaced with narration of Stanley thinking how can he be sure that the orders really stopped coming in when he steps out of the office, and leaving the entrance door open like during the phone calls allowing for the player to check. Also causes Narration issues when paired with the escape pod ending, however with this variation it just requires the player to step into the office to trigger narration when its not supposed to be there.
Starting dialogue[]
The lines Narrator says at the start of every run differ from reset to reset. See Dialogue - Rare alternatives for dialogue variations played when stepping out of the office and Dialogue(Ultra Deluxe) - Picking up the bucket for dialogue variation for picking up the bucket.
