The Stanley Controller on Stanley's desk in a teaser image.
The Stanley Controller is an item that made its initial appearance on The Stanley Parable website prior to the release of The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe to advertise the game, starting from and throughout its three year delay.[1][2][3]
On the website, the Stanley Controller slowly spins clockwise. It is possible to move and spin the controller manually by dragging the cursor over it.
Description[]
Stanley Controller concept art.
The Stanley Controller was designed by The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe's art director, Dominik Johann, with the object's concept art posted on his Twitter,[4] along with some notes for its design: "old hardware nicotine tint vibe", "90s console amalgamation", "nonsense labels", "office tools embedded", "final more tilted (as if lying on desk)". The drawing signed at the bottom right with: "♡, — dom".
The Stanley Controller is built off of the base of a regular, light-grey game controller before having several additions made to it, turning it into an amalgamation of an object. The number "427", Stanley's employee number, is printed onto the bottom left front side of the controller in white, and in the same area but on the opposite side is a speaker for a hypothetical player to talk to others through.
The location that usually holds the back, guide, and start buttons are replaced by an plus, minus, and equal sign button respectively from left to right with a calculator screen above the buttons, displaying "888" at all times as well as small icons of a smiling face and rain cloud to the top left of the screen. Beneath the central area are the left and right joysticks in a dark-grey color.
To the right side of the controller sits a blue "?" button, a red "B" button, a yellow "2" button, and a green "#" button. To the left sits a directional pad in the same shade with different smiley faces on each direction and the center, the faces displaying the following expressions: nervous (up), sad (right), surprised (down), happy (right), and neutral (middle). Interestingly, the face on the down direction is red, as opposed to the yellow which the other faces are.
A standard, yellow graphite pencil with a shark eraser facing the left is connected to the controller's charging port. The right side of the controller has a grey tape dispenser connected to it, holding a roll of brown sealing tape within. The left side of the controller has a brown stapler connected to it with a pink sticky note attached to the exposed bottom side of the stapler that says, "Once you go secret you never go becret", a reference to The Stanley Parable Helpful Development Showcase.
The backside of the Stanley Controller has two stickers attached to it, a white and circular sticker with a black outline with a pink number eight (8) in the middle, referencing the eight button from the Eight Game; the second sticker is oval-shaped with a white outline and green background that resembles the wallpaper in the green room from The Stanley Parable Demonstration, the center of the sticker contains a quote written in white text which says, "I played the Demo!"
Appearance[]
The Stanley Controller makes its sole appearance in Ultra Deluxe during The Stanley Parable 8 sequel, which is encountered after completing the Epilogue and saying yes to the Settings Person's ideas. Playing the game while The Stanley Parable 8 sequel is activated will bring the player to the Eight Game instead of the Office, where the Stanley Controller is sitting on the floor behind the wall panels on the right.
